Nespresso or dolce gusto?

You may be wondering what the difference is between the Nespresso machines and the Nescafe Dolce Gusto. While both one cup coffee makers can make similar drinks, their focus is completely different.

The Dolce Gusto makes a number of different coffee drinks using capsules. In order to make a cappucino, you use one coffee capsule and one milk capsule.

The Nespresso machine, on the other hand, brews espresso. To that, you can manually add milk if you desire, but there is no "milk capsule" for the Nespresso. Instead, the Nespresso machines have an optional milk attachment that will heat and froth milk. You can then feel like a barrista as you add the right proportion of heated milk and frothed milk.

If you're debating between a Nespresso machine and a Dolce Gusto, you should ask yourself how much you want to act like a barista when making a cappucino. For some, that sounds great; for others, the whole point of getting a one cup coffee maker is that they don't have to be involved.

  1. Hello. I would like to add that Dolce Gusto uses powder milk and their coffee is usually sweetened, unless you buy specifically unsweetened coffee capsules. A drink made with powder milk and water tastes completely different.
Also, I have heard that Nespresso sells more types of coffee. Dolce Gusto, on the other hand, allows you to make other beverages than just coffee. My brother in law loves to come to our place for a cup of Nesquik or I have tried the summer Ice Tea peach capsules. Some people find it good, some hate it. It's very sweet, too, so I used a lot more water than it suggested. Cold beverages (but not only them) use powdered ingredients.
As I got a Dolce Gusto for Christmas, I decided that my next step is to buy a milk froth machine from Nespresso (which is sold separately, too) and buy different Dolce Gusto capsules to try and diversify the drinks and to control the amount of sugar in each drink as not all of my visitors like to add sugar to their drinks.

    1. Dolce gusto is not sweetened. I bought a bulk with 10 different capsule boxes and a machine. All except Chococcino come unsweetened.

  2. ... also Nespresso machines can be automated and Dolce Gusto, as far as I know, can only be operated manually. I think it can be a good thing because you can control the strength of your drink. My

  4. I Really don't like the flavour of the coffee in the Dulci Gusto brands. I hate the powder milk taste and it is too sweet. I really like the operation of the machine, over the nespresso machine ( I have both) Just wish I could get a decent coffee pod for the dulci gusto.
Are you able to buy the refillable pods for Dulci Gusto machines?

  5. I like neither. I prefer the traditional coffee machine, you can make more coffee for cheaper per cup $. I Dolce Gusto coffee is not that great. Perhaps we can go to Starbucks for good coffee once in a while.

    1. Are you kidding me? Starbucks beats most other cafes I've tried.

    2. Actually, it is a well known fact that Starbucks serves mediocre coffee at best.

  8. Having bought a dolce gusto I wish I had bought the nespresso simply due to the fact you can buy capsules that fit in here and you can add whatever you like to the pod. As an example see link below. http://www.groupon.ae/deals/national-deal/gg-reliance-emirates-trading-llc-4/38925079?utm_source=GRPN&utm_medium=relatedDeals&ref=relatedDeals

  9. I have just bought a dolce gusto machine and the pods.
The actual machine is great, however the capicino and latte are so sickly sweet, it is revolting. I don't have sugar in my coffee and there is nothing at all on the boxes to say sweetened. so beware.....

  10. Hi thinking of buying a pod holder, the one that you have on the counter and the machine sits on top. however I can only find the one for the dolce gusto pods and I have the nespresso pods, can anyone tell me if the pods are the same size as I have the nespresso machine?

    1. Size is different, so you cant use pods from one to another.

  11. If it helps, I have a dolce gusto genio and I only choose the capsule which states "roast and ground coffee" . Those are the real deal.

What you need to do is... add milk to your cup, put in the capsule and put pull bar. You will get warm coffee .. ready to consume. If you need hot coffee, then you need the milk frother. Go buy one. :) any brand will do.
